There are various ways the elderly make their needs known. Some come right out and tell us! Or if they don't like to burden others, they may drop subtle hints in conversation, while talking about a problem they were wrestling with, or they repeatedly complain about a particular issue.
One of the most obvious signs of deterioration is poor hygiene: dressing sloppily; bathing infrequently; the men don't shave and the women don't get their hair fixed as often. This sometimes happens after the loss of a spouse or as a result of one's circle of friends shrinking as the years pass. Lack of interest in grooming could mean a person is becoming more isolated from friends and family, which can be detrimental to both their physical and emotional well-being. Long-term care and Coker go back a ways. “I grew up around the senior care industry. My mother was a director of nursing at a local facility where I spent countless hours as a child.” Prior to founding DayBreak in 2002, Coker worked for a long-term care software company. Today, he oversees operations in the lowcountry centers operations.
Coker wants customers to know Daybreak focuses on keeping them happy and safe in their current environments. That’s where “going above and beyond” is the standard, not the exception.
In his free time Coker spends time with family or fishes. (He serves on DNR’s Marine Advisory Committee.) A past deacon at South Aiken Presbyterian Church, he’s a founding member of the Caregiver Coalition of the Midlands and serves on the board of Palmetto Place Children’s Shelter.
It was eye opening. Cheryl’s grandfather moved in with her parents, driving home the point that older people often need support and help when it comes to being active, preserving self-worth, and being able to enjoy life. From day one, that experience gave Cheryl an awareness that influenced her work and caregiving at DayBreak.
Though her responsibilities would change, the lesson she learned from her grandfather continued to guide her work and responsibilities. From 2104 to May 2106, she worked as a caregiver in Adult Care Services. Today, she works as the Lowcountry office manager and helps supervise caregivers in the field. She assists, as well, with the hiring of caregivers.
Outside of work, Cheryl puts the importance of an active lifestyle into practice. Stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking keep her active on the water, while running half marathons, cycling, traveling, and listening to live music keep her moving on land.
For four years, Susan provided her aunt in New York around-the-clock care. “My aunt had onset dementia. When I returned home to Hilton Head, I knew I'd be better prepared to care for the elderly in their home if became a certified nursing assistant.” She did just that, and it led to becoming a specialist at DayBreak. Her outgoing, some might say “flamboyant,” personality makes her the perfect ambassador for chamber meetings and other events.
Her specialty is spreading DayBreak’s good work. That’s why Co-workers at DayBreak began to call her the “Ambassador,” a title that took hold. “I go to many functions and always wear my DB badge, which leads to conversations,” said Susan. “I tell people ‘There's no place like home,’ which it so happens is DayBreak's motto.” Susan realizes that most people prefer care in their own homes, a lesson she learned caring for her aunt.
Susan enjoys working at DayBreak. “The people I work with are caring, considerate, knowledgeable, reliable, and fun.” Susan, a classical pianist for 18 years, strikes the perfect chord as DayBreak goes, a veteran caregiver and ambassador of goodwill.
Kaylee is new to the field of geriatric and long-term care, but she’s instinctive and recognizes two crucial fundamentals. “One, there is truly no place like home, especially when it comes to receiving care, and, two, caregivers should be compassionate, friendly, and professional.”
As the Community Relations Director, Kaylee’s duties include marketing Daybreak’s mission and services, generating sales, and providing community outreach. She helps seniors and their families find a place much like home, something she knows is vital. “Comfort is so important and DayBreak makes that a priority.”
She’s in a good place as her career choice goes and in a good place literally. “While on vacation at Hilton Head Island three years ago, I fell in love with the area and decided to move here from Connecticut. I love the Lowcountry’s laid-back atmosphere, the moss-draped oaks, and the May River.” In her time away from work, she checks out the musicians who play at local restaurants, kayaks, swims in the Atlantic, and takes walks in Old Town Bluffton with her fiancé and dog.
I am writing this letter to express my appreciation to you and your staff for the wonderful care you have provided my mother over the last year and a half. Life has been very difficult for her since we lost our dad. Your caregivers have been sensitive to her special needs. They are always on time and neat in appearance. They have not been caregivers, but companions as well. On occasion, they have demonstrated their thoughtfulness through a candy bar or box of chocolates. This has been a huge source of comfort to Mom. Shari has always been professional and accommodating with last minute changes. She is very careful to match up the client's needs and personality with the caregivers. There has never been a time I couldn't reach her almost immediately by phone, even on weekends. She is truly an asset to DayBreak.
